PeekShield Privacy Policy

PeekShield is a browser extension that blurs private content on messaging web apps (WhatsApp Web, Telegram Web, Discord, Slack, Messenger, Facebook chat, and LinkedIn messaging) so people near your screen can't read your conversations. Hover over blurred content to reveal it.

The short version: PeekShield collects nothing. It sends nothing anywhere. It has no servers, no analytics, and no tracking. Everything happens locally in your browser.

What data the extension accesses

PeekShield applies CSS (visual blur) to pages on the supported messaging sites. To do this it runs a content script on those sites. It does not read, store, transmit, or process the content of your messages, contacts, media, or any personal information. The blur is purely visual styling: the extension never needs to "see" what your messages say.

What data the extension stores

The extension stores only your own settings: which blur filters are on/off, the blur intensity, and the auto-blur preference. These are saved using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync, which keeps them in your browser profile and (if you are signed into Chrome) syncs them across your own devices via Google's account sync.

• This data never leaves Google's sync infrastructure for us, we have no server and receive none of it.
• It contains only extension settings, not message content.

What the extension does NOT do

• No network requests of any kind (no fetch, no analytics, no telemetry, no error reporting, no remote code).
• No reading or collection of messages, contacts, photos, or account data.
• No selling or sharing of data with anyone (there is nothing to sell or share).
• No cookies, no localStorage, no tracking identifiers.

Permissions and why they're needed

• storage, to save your blur settings locally.
• activeTab, to detect whether the tab you're on is a supported messaging site, so the popup can show the right controls. It does not read page content.
• Host access to the supported messaging sites, required to inject the blur stylesheet on those sites. The extension runs nowhere else.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published with the extension and the "Last updated" date above will change.
